Reason: Some family members don’t understand ‘college’.
Like said in my previous post (check it out if you haven’t read it yet; it’s pretty important) I love my family. The problem is, some of them don’t know me so well. My aunt, a very loving and caring person, gave me a lecture at my dad’s family Christmas on the expenses of college. Though she didn’t attend herself, she seemed to be somewhat of an expert on the topic. I got mostly money from that side of the family (mainly because no one knew what to buy me) and she believed that I needed a plan for it.
Little did she know that I already had a plan. I need a MacBook for the journalism school I’m going to and I need all the extra cash I can get to pay for it.
She continued on about the importance of being frugal. She then said something I will never forget. “Your mom said you needed a book for college that is like $1300.” I was a little stumped when she said this. I haven’t even picked out classes; how would I know what books I’ll need. I questioned her and she responded with, “What kind of book costs that much money. Couldn’t you buy it used for much cheaper? Do you really need the book?”.
That’s when it clicked. She wasn’t talking about a book. She was talking about a MacBook. She just had no idea as to what it was. When I corrected her, the entire room looked at me like I was crazy. They had that look like ‘What the heck is a MacBook and how’s that any different than a book book’. After I said the word ‘laptop’ they seemed to catch on.
While humerous, it was still a little frustrasting. How could one possible believe a paperback book would be that much money. Unless it was one the first handwritten Bibles and was plated in gold, I wouldn’t pay that much for book. The best part is, there are still more moments like this to come. And that is exactly the reason for this blog.
If you’re a college student, it’s a good guess that you find yourself with too much to do and too li
