New New Media Parenting

This video of a father punishing his daughter by firing 9 rounds into her laptop just went viral on Friday. The story is that the daughter wrote a Facebook note that said some disrespectful things about her father and mother. The father, upon finding this note, decided that shooting her laptop would be the best punishment for his mouthy teenager. I’m just taking a wild stab in the dark here, but I’m guessing this took place in the South.

Now, here’s my question to you:

Is this child abuse? or is this an ideal punishment for a teenage girl who is using new new media to bash her parents? Watch the video and decide.

What I thought was really cool was that the father responded to his daughter’s insolence using new new media as well.

BONUS QUESTION: Do you think new new media causes teenagers to be more disrespectful toward their parents? Or is new new media just another form of communication that allows teenagers to express their dissatisfaction with their parental units? Vise versa: parents to express dissatisfaction with their children?

What we’re seeing here is exhibitionist punishment. The child ridicules her parents in public, and the father responds by punishing the daughter in public….and it GOES VIRAL!
