My New Toy

After 3 and a half years of working, playing, and porno-surfing on my white Macbook >:p, I finally upgraded to a Macbook Pro. It’s a ‘pre-loved’ unit (euphemism for second-hand) but a decent one. Being second-hand doesn’t really bother me since I think I got the good end of the deal given the condition of the laptop and specs vs the price I paid for it (DIRT CHEAP).

The upgrade I would say is a modest leap – I say modest because as per processing power, from a 1.8ghz to 2.2ghz, it isn’t much. It’s a leap nonetheless since I’m getting a bigger screen (15-inch widescreen), an Nvidia graphics processor with dedicated memory, a Superdrive, more ports, and all the fancy pro features such as an ambient light sensor and a better-looking, more robust aluminum body. It’s a sexy beast let me tell ya – and a HUGE one. I’m still getting used to the size coming from a 13-incher but I welcome it. Oh yeah, the logic board, which is the “engine” of any laptop, is brand new with a 3-month warranty from Powermac. It’s like buying a 3-yr old BMW with a brand new engine. Pretty sweet.

It’s not all peaches though – the only downside is that the display has some minor imperfections which are noticeable against a white picture or background. It’s not enough to be a turn off though; the display still looks sharp and fabulous. I’ll eventually have the screen replaced in the States (gonna have it done by these guys: MyService) and even with that expense, it’s still a good deal – with the screen replacement, the total cost clocks in way below the price of a brand new 15-inch Macbook Pro. So with a new logic board and eventually a new screen, it’s practically a brand new laptop at a fraction of the cost.

I do hope to keep this baby for another 2 years. With the things I do on a laptop (surf, work, play games, music production, DJing), the horsepower is just right. The speed, performance, and the design I think will keep me happy for a long time.
