Does the thought of shooting a music video as an independant artist make you sweat? It might if you are trying to get a cool and professional looking visual presentation out to the masses with little or no money. But with dedication, ingenuity and creative genius you can “Do it Yourself” (D.I.Y.). Below are the steps my partner Christian and I (aka “Montalfish”) followed as the recipe to success for our D.I.Y. Music Video for the song ”Torn to Pieces” from our soon to be released album “The Double Side of Nothing.”
1. A borrowed Nikon D90 Digital-SLR-Camera and a Ricohmatic 225 vintage camera.
2. Two Sandisk 4GB Secure Digital SD HC Memory Cards. sandisk.com
3. Two people who will try almost anything and shoot most anywhere to get the right shot.
4. A Tripod, Duffle bag of clothes, an Apartment, a chair, 2 lamps, a bathroom a Power Plant and most important a dumpster filled with dirt.
4. A Gateway PC laptop, Sony Vegas and After Effects and you are in business.
5. Last but not least a pair of angel wings bought from Ricky’s.
Here are some quick tips and tricks we used when we shot this video. We shot parts of this video outside using natural light. We compensated a lot of our shots using low depth of field to get a long cinematic feel and distorted perspectives. Meaning objects in the foreground are in focus and the background is distorted. We shot some scenes through the Ricohmatic 225 by positioning the Nikon lense through the view finder of the Ricohmatic 225. Now with all that being said please enjoy the video.
