Dell Studio 1537 Notebook Review

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

The Dell Studio 1537 is a sight for sore eyes, with our model coming with a red lid to round out its overall smooth appearance. It also comes with some decent firepower behind that standard Studio beauty, packing a latest generation Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26 GHz to go along with 4GB RAM, a 320GB HDD and a dedicated 256MB ATI Radeon HD 3450 GPU. When you consider that you can get all this for a cost that won’t exceed three digits, the Studio looks like a solid value.

Indeed, the Studio 1537 battery is very flexible. For example, when you look at processors, you can find that you have quite a range to choose from. You have a choice of getting any of the Intel Pentium Dual Core, Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel Core i7 processors, with speeds of up to 1.7 GHz and 3.06 GHz turbo mode. This means that anyone can choose a processor that will be ideal for their needs as well as their budget restrictions. These options are not just ordinary processors; the Core i7 for example is considered the “next” step in processor technology. The Dual Core and Core 2 Duo are powerful as well.

Complementing this strength in processing is an equally formidable random access memory space. The Dell Studio 15 buyer can get up to 8-gigabytes of RAM to power the unit’s processing. Such a combination can only mean smooth and seamless processing even in memory-hungry applications and games.

The Dell Studio Laptop 1537 can be configured with different operating systems depending upon the nature of use. Here are the most common operating systems that usually the Dell Studio Laptop is configured with and used widely. Simply choose the operating system that your Dell Studio 1537 battery is loaded with download the desired driver for the operating system.

Pros:
The Studio 15’s display screen stands out by being able to reach 1080p high-definition resolutions. Plus, it can be fitted with powerful graphics processors from ATI.

Cons:
The default configuration has only an integrated graphics media accelerator. This could restrict the graphics processing that the person on a tight budget can have access to with this model.

On the software side, the laptop we received was running Vista Home Premium, and came equipped with Microsoft Works, Roxio Creator, and the crapware infestation of choice comes from Google, both as Google Desktop, and as Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer. An eBay link on the desktop reinforces the fact that the desktop is for sale.

Dell has also included a new network tool, but is more annoying than helpful, consistently reminding you to turn on the Guest account (usually not a clever thing to do security-wise) and in a few circumstances ran the “Network Repair Wizard” even when our connection was completely fine. All these battery for Dell Studio 1537 custom networking applications vendors attempt to design are clearly a perceived shortcoming in the way Windows does its networking, but we’ve yet to see one of these applications that are actually any good. Curiously, the standard nag-ware antivirus wasn’t bundled, however, checking the Dell website reveals that the laptop should be shipped with a 30-day trial of Trend Micro.

In usage the laptop was fairly comfortable to use, although it has some flaws. The 9-cell battery pokes out narrowly from the bottom of the laptop, which does tilt the machine at a decent angle for typing, but unfortunately makes it very uncomfortable for actually placing on your lap. It also runs fairly warm, in particular in the front under the palmrest (it is less noticeable in the back because of the tilting). The laptop runs very quietly though even when playing Cds, and the sound quality is good.

Overall the Dell Studio 17 battery is a stylish machine that is powerful enough to handle your media without breaking the bank. The modern Intel Core 2 Duo CPU along with 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD go a long way when combined with a dedicated GPU, although not quite as far as we were hoping. Still, the colorful lid, extremely bright display and attractive overall design make the Studio a desirable laptop at a desirable price.
